Ceruti School Bass Violin
3/4 Size, Gamba Shaped, Flatback Model
Made in Cremona, Italy c. 1800
- From the school of Guiseppi Ceruti
- Top table is a two-piece plate of medium vertical grained spruce
- Back table is a two-piece plate of moderately curly maple with an ebony half moon located at the neck block button and a decorative maple overlay located below the neck block button
- Ribs of matching curly maple to that of the back table with ebony inserts located at the neck block
- Original scroll with matching curly maple neck graft
- Gears are individual brass tuners mounted on decorative brass plates with two tuners to a cheek
- The instrument is set up for the modern school of steel string playing with a tension-compensating, raised saddle and a Kolstein adjustable bridge
- Varnish is deep, reddish amber
- This bass is a fine example of Cremonese workmanship with a lush, deep, projecting sound quality typical of master Italian basses
- The instrument was restored by Samuel Kolstein & Son, Ltd. in 1979 and is in fully restored mint condition
- Overall body length: 42 in.
