John Devereux Bass Violin
7/8 Size, Violin Cornered, Flatback
Made in Melbourne, Australia c. 1860
- Top table is a multi-piece plate of slab-cut fir
- Back table is a two-piece plate of sycamore, ranging in grain from flamed at the center joint to modified slab-cut outer flanks
- Ribs of moderately flamed sycamore
- Original scroll of slightly figured sycamore with a highly flamed maple neck graft
- Individual brass tuning gears mounted on brass plates
- Varnish is deep reddish brown with amber hues
- Extremely fine example of Devereux workmanship for the period he worked in Melborne Austrailia. Master orchestral Bass; even in all registers with impressive projection and great depth.
