  • Top table is a six-piece plate of slab-cut fir
  • Back table is a six-piece plate of slab-cut poplar with decorative ebony half moon at the neck block button
  • Ribs of matching poplar to that of the back table with ebony inserts on the sides of the neck block
  • Original scroll of plain grained poplar with a broad flamed maple neck graft
  • This instrument was originally a three-string design. The original gears were replaced in the 19th century with Baker-style brass tuners mounted on brass plates.
  • Varnish is deep reddish brown
  • This bass has a deep, strong sound with projection in all registers; superb orchestral instrument; impressive in all aspects
  • Fully restored to excellent condition by Samuel Kolstein & Son, Ltd. in 2000 and so labeled
  • Overall body length: 45 1/4 in.
  • Width at the upper bout: 21 1/2 in.
  • Width at the center bout: 15 1/8 in.
  • Width at the lower bout: 28 1/4 in.
  • Mensure (string length): 42 1/2 in.
