Historic Italian Upright Bass — Exceptional Provenance & Pedigree

Offered on behalf of Ms. Carolyn Davis Fryer

This remarkable upright bass is offered for sale for the first time in over 40 years, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire an instrument of distinguished lineage, history, and musical pedigree.

Ms. Carolyn purchased this bass in 1983 from Homer Mensch, longtime member of the New York Philharmonic. She studied with Mr. Mensch both at the Juilliard School Pre-College Division and during her undergraduate studies, forming a close pedagogical and professional relationship.

According to information passed down to Ms. Carolyn at the time of purchase, the instrument is believed to be an Italian bass attributed to Alessandro Gagliano, circa early 1700s. The bass has significant historical family provenance: before Ms. Carolyn bought it, it belonged to the Giobbe Family, where Luigi Giobbe, followed by his son Felix Giobbe, both accomplished bassists who performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Luigi and Felix were the father and brother, respectively, of Connie Giobbe Mensch, wife of Homer Mensch.

At some point in its history, the back was professionally replaced, utilizing original aged wood sourced from the Pollmann workshop, a respected German bass-making lineage. The instrument has since been well cared for and actively played at the highest professional level.

Ms. Carolyn’s distinguished career includes:

  • Substitute performances with the New York Philharmonic

  • Faculty positions at Rutgers UniversityMannes Preparatory DivisionBoston UniversityBoston BalletGordon College, and the University of Massachusetts–Lowell

  • Performances with the Brandenburg Ensemble

  • Participation and touring with Marlboro Music

  • Substitute work with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

This bass has been a trusted professional instrument throughout decades of elite orchestral, chamber, and educational work. Its long, continuous ownership, storied provenance, and musical history make it especially compelling for serious players, collectors, and institutions.
